A NAROOMA man is expected to be charged in Batemans Bay Local Court this morning with the murder of 47-year-old Sam Connelly of Narooma.

The man was arrested on Friday and remains in custody after being charged in relation to a separate incident.

Far South Coast Local Area Commander Superintendent Michael Willing said detectives interviewed the 26-year-old man at Batemans Bay on Saturday night and, as a result, detectives expect to charge him with Mr Connelly's murder.

Police were first called to Mr Connelly's unit on the corner of Harper Cres and Willcocks Rd in Narooma about 10.15pm on Thursday after reports of a disturbance.

They were called back to the four-unit block about 3am on Friday after a neighbour found Mr Connelly seriously injured on the stairs to his unit where he lived alone.

He was suffering from head and facial injuries and died in the ambulance en route to Moruya Hospital.

Police established a crime scene around the unit, which has been examined by forensic investigators over the last three days.

Mr Willing said it appears Mr Connelly was assaulted with a "weapon" but could not release details at this stage. A post mortem will be conducted in Sydney today.

Supt Willing said the 26-year-old was taken into custody at the scene on Friday morning in relation "to another matter".

Mr Connelly lived with his family at the Wallaga Lake Koori Village, south of Narooma, until about a year ago.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the death to contact them.
